Doctors Want To Know

Another news item today about doctors warning their patients to tell them about any and all alternative medical programs they are using. The concern is that without full disclosure there can't be full medical care. Not to mention there could be dangers involved in mixing more than one kind of treatment.

I know many people afraid to tell their doctor of alternative treatments they find helpful. And some who take vitamin and mineral supplements often keep this to themselves. Why this reluctance to be open with their primary care physician?

Because they know some doctors will judge all this complementary medical care very harshly. Many doctors (especially older ones) are not open minded to anything outside of their medical school training. Some patients feel it is too risky to tell them. Patients don't want to upset this close minded doctor.

The real risk is something going wrong because the doctor did not know. Sometimes its better to change doctors and work with one who has training in alternative medicine in addition to his orthodox medical training. They can resolve any conflict right up front. Before something goes wrong.

Complementary describes techniques used in conjunction with conventional medicine, alternative describes techniques that can be used in place of it. There are estimates one-third of adult americans use one of these complementary or alternative treatments.
